Countdown to a date

A countdown to a date answers a different question from a timer: not 'how long until this is done' but 'how long until this happens'. Days, hours, minutes and seconds until a launch, a deadline, a birthday, a holiday, or the new year.

Save as many countdowns as you like and switch between them. Each keeps its own title and target, and they persist across reloads.

How to use it

1. Give the countdown a name — the thing you are waiting for.
2. Pick the target date and time, or use a preset for New Year, tomorrow morning, or a week from now.
3. Press Save countdown to keep it. Saved countdowns appear in a list with the time remaining next to each.
4. Select any saved countdown to bring it into the large display.

Time zones and the target you pick

The date and time you enter is interpreted in your own local time zone, which is almost always what you want for a personal deadline. It also means a countdown shared with someone in another zone will read differently on their screen, because they are counting to their own local reading of that moment.

For an event with a fixed time in a specific city — a market open, a broadcast, a call — work the target out in the time zone converter first, then enter your local equivalent here.

What happens when it reaches zero

The display switches to Done and shows the full date and time that has now passed. Past countdowns stay in your saved list marked as passed, so an annual date is easy to update rather than re-enter. This tool does not play a sound at zero — for an audible alert at a specific time, use the alarm clock.

Nothing you enter is sent anywhere. This page has no backend and no account — your settings, alarms and saved entries are stored in your own browser's local storage and stay on this device. Clearing your browser data clears them.

Frequently asked questions

Does the countdown keep running if I close the page?

There is nothing to keep running — it is calculated from the target date each time you open the page, so it is always current. Saved countdowns are stored in your browser and will be there when you return.

Can I count down to something in the past?

You can enter a past date, and it will show as Done with the date that passed. To count time since an event, the date calculator gives you the elapsed days, weeks and months.

Will it alert me when the countdown ends?

No — it is a display, not an alarm. Set an alarm for the time itself if you need to be told.

How many countdowns can I save?

As many as you want. They are stored in your browser's local storage, so the practical limit is that storage quota, which is far beyond any realistic number of countdowns.

Is the time remaining shown in whole days?

It is broken into days, hours, minutes and seconds. Days are whole days remaining, with the leftover shown in the other three fields.
